Slowing Down Thanks to the “Slow Movement”

Dear readers,

We want to discuss in more detail a concept that inspires all of us every day: the Slow Movement.

Historically, this trend dates back to 1986, when its pioneer, Carlo Petrini, opposed the opening of a McDonald’s in Rome. The Slow Food movement was born, in opposition to fast food.

Over time, the movement has expanded into several fields: fashion, design, the arts, urban planning, and so on…

“Everything in our lives is fast-paced: fast food, high-speed cars, rushed conversations, families in a hurry, quick getaways… We think we’re living amazing lives, and yet we aren’t even “present” to enjoy them. Meals and moments with friends or family are timed, and we don’t even take the time to fully savor them. We don’t appreciate life for what it’s worth and are sorely lacking in a genuine connection to the present moment.” This quote, taken from the website www.slowmovement.com, perfectly illustrates the philosophy of this movement: slowing down the pace in order to better savor life and connect more deeply with ourselves and others.

To reap these benefits, however, you still need to take the time to let them in. It’s at this point that, very often, we fall short.

How many times have we wished to see that exhibition, read that book, watch that movie, or spend time with friends and family without thinking about work? It’s a discipline we need to allow ourselves, to take care of ourselves and be there for others.
After the kids go to bed, take some time to meditate, even if it’s just for 5 minutes. Or during your lunch break at work, book that ticket to the exhibition you’ve been wanting to see. On public transportation, reply to your friends and family and enjoy your conversations. Or simply daydream and savor the moment.

In the wellness industry, this concept is at the forefront of the minds of the professionals who welcome you. The goal is to help you disconnect from your worries and experience total relaxation. You’ll leave feeling rejuvenated and at peace with your body and mind.

How To Spa has drawn inspiration from this lifestyle to offer you relaxation tutorials, no matter where you are or what you’re in the mood for. Sometimes all it takes is 5, 10, or 20 minutes. We’ve recently started offering video tutorials to help you create your own at-home spa, complete with tips, self-massage techniques, and recommended products.

So take some time for yourself, and treat yourself for a moment. Recharge in your own way, and enjoy these precious moments in life!
